Urban Legend: Lipsticks contain lead. 含鉛唇膏，你食咗未？

Lead in lipstick. Unfortunately, this urban legend turns out to be true.

Studies show women eat more than six pounds of lipstick in a lifetime -- more than 500 tubes. But do you know that your shocking red lipstick contain a shockingly unsafe amount of lead?

Lead is often present in the pigment of the reddest lipsticks. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a 0.1 parts per million limit for lead in candy. But Ironically there are no FDA standards limiting lead and other toxins in lipstick.

A study of lipsticks bought in the U.S. showed these contained the highest amount of lead:
• L'Oreal Colour Riche True Red (0.65 ppm)
• L'Oreal Colour Rich Classic Wine (0.58 ppm)
• Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor Maximum Red (0.56 ppm)
• Cover Girl Continuous Color Cherry Brandy (0.28 ppm)

Earlier this year -- in a debate that seems to resurface every few years -- the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a coalition of health and environmental groups, issued a plea to the FDA to release information the agency had accumulated on the amount of lead in lipstick.

Cosmetics companies are required to list their "intended" ingredients on labels. But lead is considered an "unintended" byproduct of the manufacturing process and not listed.
